Ahoy and greetings from our new home, a catamaran named GRINS! Torin, Anna and I have been spending the past few days prepping and outfitting the vessel with all of the necessary equipment and food for our lifeworks voyage. We are fully packed and ready for the arrival of our shipmates! We as staff have been talking a lot about the community we hope to foster in the coming weeks, and can’t wait to have everyone here and be a complete crew. Here is an introduction to the crew of Grins:Torin- program directorBorn in the Mountains of Vermont, Torin’s background is deep in snow sports. Managing a family owned ski shop, working with local and nationally ranked athletes, and developing ski grinding structures for those athletes keeps him busy in the winter months. Giving back, Torin also sits on the board of directors for the local not-for-profit Junior Ski Club. Torin also has a long history in service, starting alternative youth programs with the local recreation and parks departments, as well as recycling programs in the local elementary schools. In the summer months Torin’s interest in sailing led him to Sea|mester in 2000 and has been a part of our team with our summer service programs in the BVI’s since 2003. Torin holds a USCG 100 Ton Master License, is certified as Level 1 in the Game Of Logging, and is also an ABC Board Certified Pedorthist.Matt- skipperMatt comes to Lifeworks with a deep passion for both sailing and the ocean. After joining the ActionQuest program for two years as a teenager, Matt connected with the LifeWorks family in 2011 and has been working for the British Virgin Islands program ever since. Matt’s favorite spot in the BVI is Spyglass Hill.Anna- mateAnna is from Siler City, North Carolina and is studying Marine Science at North Carolina State University. She spent two summers as a student on ActionQuest and fell in love with the program, sailing, and the lifestyle. In 2012 she sailed with Sirius Sailing from the British Virgin Islands to Bermuda aboard S/Y Argo. She began making plans to sail from The British Virgin Islands to Tahiti with Sea|mester in the spring 2013, which she just completed. Anna has participated in the sailing team at NC State and is a certified Rescue Diver. She loves being on boats and will do anything to be on the water.
