21-day vs. 14-day Sacred Valley Service vs. 21-day Footsteps of the Inca
Sacred Valley Service (SVS) and Footsteps of the Inca (FOI) run side-by-side (meaning students stay in the same accommodation, participate in a lot of the same activities, etc.) most days. The main exceptions are that FOI does the 4-day Lares Trek (involves tent camping) and a couple extra day trips out of Cuzco, while SVS does mostly service with Casa Mantay and MySmallHelp during those times.
SVS is offered as a 21-day or a 14-day international service program. Excursions/Activities that are not a part of the 14 day itinerary include Machu Picchu, the whitewater rafting day and river cleanup, the cultural tour at Huerto Paraiso (pottery, honey, chocolate, coffee making), and three days of service in the Sacred Valley.
Service Partnerships & Sample projects
Casa Mantay is a center for adolescent mothers and their children in Cuzco (see this link for an excellent video of the project). Students are divided into small groups, then rotate between various project areas including helping in the kitchen (doing dishes, cooking, etc.), helping in the nursery/with childcare, helping with the laundry, and helping with infrastructure projects (changes every year, but think painting, remodeling rooms, building gardens, cleaning the land of debris, etc.).
Santa Theresa Orphanage is a home run by Catholic nuns for individuals of all ages with serious physical and mental disabilities.
MySmallHelp has projects all over Peru. We work with them in the Sacred Valley on various community development projects such as construction
Preferred flight route
Outbound: Afternoon/evening flight Miami (MIA) to Lima (LIM) -> overnight at hotel near LIM -> morning flight LIM to Cuzco (CUZ)
Inbound: Morning flight CUZ to LIM -> closing activities and overnight in Lima -> morning flight LIM to MIA
