Location: Spanish Town
What’s up, everybody? Bella here, taking over for Heloise as skipper. Today, we woke up nice and early (7 a.m., but I unfortunately woke up at 6) and ate a delicious breakfast of oatmeal. Lia and Ella did an amazing job of boiling the water for the meal. Shortly after, we all loaded into Blaze, our dinghy, and headed to the shore of Spanish Town.
On land, we met Julie, a woman of many hats. At the school we worked at today, she teaches classes centered around agriculture. She also runs a recycling business. The whole group thought she was so cool, and it was really interesting to hear what she had to say. With her, we took an open taxi to Cibony School and set up a home base at the picnic tables. There, we finally got to indulge in what I think the group misses the most: ICE!!! (Thank goodness for Julie, the ice enthusiast).
Soon after, we split into two groups. Riley, Annabelle, Maya, and Ella went to work on building a big toy sailboat for these kids to play on on the playground. This group made a lot of progress today and will definitely be able to finish it within the next couple of days we are working with this school. The rest of us (Lia, Amelia, Coco, Siena, Heloise, and I) went with Julie to the tortoise enclosures. In these enclosures lived four red-footed tortoises (Red, Mango, and two with no name). They were adorbs. We started by redoing the fence that surrounded their living space. Lia handled the drill, I removed staples, and Amelia and Coco worked to line up the new chicken wire. After our lunch break of PB and Js, we headed over to the friendly construction workers to ask them to add sand and mix our concrete. We used the first batch of concrete to start the new pond for the turtles to soak in. It took a total of three batches of concrete to complete the pond (we enjoyed Amelia and Siena’s ASMR with the concrete). Julie even let us sign our names in the pond to leave our mark!
Earlier, we found a baby tortoise lying on the ground. It appeared dead, but after Siena spotted a slight movement, we were able to nurse the baby back to life. We even named him Turkey!
The rest of the afternoon was pretty chill. Riley treated the whole boat to ice cream. After enjoying our sweet treat, we headed back to the boat to find that we had lost most of our bowls and spoons due to huge waves knocking out our dishy pit bucket (dirty dishes from breakfast).
We ended the day with some nice ocean showers, a dinner of cheddar and broccoli pasta, squeeze, a lifestyle forum personality test (we had to find out what type of leader we were), and a movie with brownies that I had to whip up. Right now, the whole group is chilling, finishing up the second Pirates of the Caribbean, and we will talk to you tomorrow! Good night!!
Question of the day – Make up a word or sound and create a meaning for it!
