Location: Lake Myvatn
The day started out bright and early to catch a bus ride to Lake Myvatn. Some of us struggled, like myself, since we only had two showers and limited time to eat. At the beginning of the bus ride, I was talking with Kyle, Luke, and Grisha in the back, talking about home and how tired we were. After that, we fell asleep in our own sections so we could relax. I was fascinated by the architecture of an underwater roadway as it went at least 100 feet down. Luckily, we got to see steep mountains that looked like volcanoes with huge old lava fields at the bottom. Some looked ominous as we couldn’t see the peak of them because they were blocked off by fog.
Our first stop was at a convenience store, where we started with small snacks for the long drive ahead. With the second nap of the day that didn’t last for long, we passed through heavy fog fields, where the visibility was very poor; the driver couldn’t see 10 feet in front of him. When we entered a city, we were happy to see our rest stop for lunch, as they had tons of food we would see back home, like hamburgers, fish and chips, and pizza.
After regrouping on the bus, we were given our phones, where we called back home for our parents and friends. Continuing on, we saw more grand mountains along with wildlife like the Icelandic horses and sheep with their babies. Nearing the end, we stopped at a grocery store where the counselors stocked up food for four nights, and our drivers switched due to the fact they could only drive for so long. Ending our trip at Hlid Hostel, we quickly established ground rules on lights out and the fact other people are staying here.
Everyone wanted to see what was outside, so we all took a short trip to see the surrounding area. We were right on top of an old lava field and close to some big mountains. The excursion ended quickly, as it soon began to rain, and the wind got faster. We ended the day eating marinated lamb, rice, and vegetables, where we said our good nights and talked about the itinerary for tomorrow.
I can’t wait to see you, Mom and Dad, along with the animals! -Roman
